WATER PROCESS DECAFFEINATED
Caribou Coffee is dedicated to offering naturally-processed decaf coffee, using a chemical-free water decaffeination process to preserve the original nuance and flavor.
HOW WATER-BASED DECAFFEINATION WORKS
STEP 1: PREPARATION
At the beginning of the decaffeination process, green coffee is soaked in water, drawing out both caffeine and coffee flavor solids (natural components that create coffee’s taste).
STEP 2: DECAFFEINATION
Those beans are discarded and water is sent through a carbon filter to remove the caffeine, leaving behind “flavor-charged” water.
STEP 3: FLAVOR-CHARGE SOAK
Next, caffeinated beans are immersed in this “flavor-charged” water. The caffeine diffuses into the water, but since the water is already “full” of flavor, the flavor solids have nowhere to go and remain in the beans.
STEP 4: READY TO ROAST
The beans are dried, cleaned and ready for a Caribou Coffee craft-roast!
